Working on behalf of the Social Services, a child and family social worker is responsible for assessing the needs of the child and to make an initial appraisal of the parent’s ability to provide these needs. Many child and family social workers provide assistance to the parents to enable the child to remain at home whilst receiving the proper amount of care to allow them to continue their lives with the minimum of disruption.

This aspect is important as a key duty of any child or family social worker is to try and prevent any abuse or mistrust occurring as opposed to providing care after any incident or prolonged period of activity has been undertaking. By assisting a family earlier in the process, a children and family social worker is aiming to reduce the risks and dangers a child may face and to provide a stronger level of support for the family as a whole.

A key role of a child or family social worker that can often be overlooked is just to provide support and to lend an ear to any troubles that may be occurring in a child or an adult’s life. Many families with young children who face other difficulties may experience a feeling of isolation and are unsure of where to turn with their problems and this is where an experienced child and family social worker can provide much needed assistance.

Families with a child who has additional needs or perhaps suffer from a disability also comes under the remit of a child and family social worker and is their responsibility to provide extra assistance regarding the welfare of the child and to provide support to the family through means of information, guidance and supervisory support, if required.

As well as the specialist duties associated with the role of child and family social worker, there will be a requirement for the social worker to undertake tasks such as reporting to external agents, liasing with colleagues and performing to rotas and local government policies and regulations.
