Substance Abuse Social WorkThere is a growing need for the provision of substance abuse care and social workers and there is a growing awareness that the help and support provided by a substance misuse care worker can be of great benefit to anyone who is looking to turn their life around. It is fair to say that the role of substance misuses social worker can be extremely demanding but the rewards from such a challenging role are enough to persuade a growing number of care workers into the role. A problem that many substance misuses social workers find is that the substance abuse is commonly one problem in their clients life and the substance abuse social worker is required to have a variety of other skills to assist the person to function well in society. These can include gaining the trust of the person they are caring for or acting as go-between between them and family members. If the person who the substance abuse social worker is caring for has a child in their care or has a family, there can be additional pressures in the person’s life and the substance abuse social worker will need to be able to provide support in all areas of the person’s life. Obviously a social work qualification is a requirement for working in such a demanding industry, the experience of working with substance misusers on a daily basis becomes invaluable to the development of the role. As well as the day to day involvement with the client, there can be a need for the substance misuse social worker to be aware of the legal results of the user being caught misusing again and it is a key requirement of the role for the social worker to make their client aware of the implications of extended substance misuse. The substance misuse social worker will also be required to work closely with external bodies and local councils to be fully aware of the latest developments in substance misuse programs and to share information between local bodies. The great variety in the role means that a substance misuse social worker will have countless duties to perform in their daily routine but the impact they can have not only on one persons life but on families and whole communities ensures it is a job that many are keen to take. |
